The solutions of all the question of Exercise 2.1 is given below.

Question 1: The graphs of y = p(x) are given in Figure below, for some polynomials p(x). Find the number of zeroes of p(x), in each case.

i.

Solution:

In the above figure, the graph of the polynomial p(x) does not cut the x axis at any point. Therefore, the number of zeros of the polynomial p(x) is 0.

ii.

Solution:

In the above figure, the graph of the polynomial p(x) cuts the x-axis at one point. Therefore, the number of zeros of the polynomial p(x) is 1.

iii.

Solution:

In the above figure, the graph of the polynomial p(x) cuts the x-axis at three points. Therefore, the number of zeros of the polynomial p(x) is 3.

iv.

Solution:

In the above figure, the graph of the polynomial p(x) cuts the x-axis at two points. Therefore, the number of zeros of the polynomial p(x) is 2.

v.

Solution:

In the above figure, the graph of the polynomial p(x) cuts the x-axis at four points. Therefore, the number of zeros of the polynomial p(x) is 4.

vi.

Solution:

In the above figure, the graph of the polynomial p(x) cuts the x-axis at three points. Therefore, the number of zeros of the polynomial p(x) is 3.
